We are frequently told that the global climate emergency affects “all of us,” but citizens and political leaders tend to have more localized perspectives on the nature of the threat, and what they want their governments to do to protect themselves and others. In this talk, I will detail the findings from public opinion studies of citizens from the United States and several dozen African countries to highlight some of the political constraints on and opportunities for developing effective solutions to the climate crisis.

About the speaker
Evan Lieberman is Professor of Political Science and Contemporary Africa and Director of the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and he is a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). Lieberman conducts research on the political-economy of development, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, including with respect to democratic governance, comparative ethnic politics, dignity appeals, and climate governance.
